So, a medical trial can be used to test treatments.\n\nFor example, if a new medicine is better than what is used at the moment…or how safe a treatment is. \n\nTrials can be different sizes, from a single set of patients in one city, to patients all over the country and abroad, in many research centres.\n\nUsually in a trial, some patients receive one treatment while others receive another. \n\nThe decision about which patients receive which treatment, is usually made by computer. \n\nThis is called randomisation. So the patient, nurse or doctor don’t make the decision.\n\nRandomisation means each treatment is given to a similar mix of patients to make sure the results are not due to anything else, like their age or where they live. \n\nUsually the patient, nurse or doctor will only find out which treatment a patient has received at the end of the trial.",{"url":196},"panorama-card-image-generic 1@2x.png",{"type":190,"title":198,"video":199,"image":202},"Why do we do trials?",{"vimeoId":200,"videoTitle":198,"videoTranscript":201},"1090088195?h=b6c96c18eb","### Why do we do trials? \n\nWe might think a new treatment is going to be better than what is used at the moment. \n\nBut we cannot know until we test it in a trial.\n\nSo trials are needed to compare treatments, and find out what works best. \n\nThis helps us improve the care given to patients, including children and teenagers. \n\nFor patients there are positives about being in a trial. \n\nThe results from trials can also help other patients as well as patients in the future, by finding out which treatments work best. \n\nThis means that many treatments you are given have already been tested safely in trials with other people.",{"url":203},"panorama-card-image-generic 2@2x.png",{"type":190,"title":205,"video":206,"image":209},"Who is in a research team?",{"vimeoId":207,"videoTitle":205,"videoTranscript":208},"1090088134?h=378e29f798","### Who is in a research team?\n\nTrials usually involve lots of different people.\n\nYou’ll meet some of these people if you take part in a trial.\n\nSome of them work behind the scenes and you won’t even see them.\n\nThe principal investigator sometimes called the chief investigator leads the study, and this is likely to be a doctor or researcher.\n\nA research nurse or study nurse will usually look after you during the trial and collect information about you.\n\nSometimes this work is done by the doctor looking after you, your GP or the hospital doctor.\n\nScientists and researchers study your blood samples and the results of the tests.\n\nThe data manager enters this data into the computer.\n\nThe statistician will analyse the data to make sure the maths is right.\n\nThey all work together as a team to make sure the trial runs well.",{"url":210},"panorama-card-image-generic 3@2x.png",{"sectionLabel":212,"theme":17},"Modal video cards",{"pageTitle":127,"pageMetadata":214,"page_content":215},{"htmlTitle":127,"htmlDesc":127},[216,220,224,235],{"type":131,"sectionSettings":217,"title":136,"text":137,"image":218,"settings":219,"strapline":135},{"textAlign":133,"theme":134,"sectionLabel":135},{"url":139,"width":140,"height":141},{"imgPosition":143},{"type":145,"sectionSettings":221,"settings":222,"text":150,"title":135,"image":223},{"textAlign":133,"sectionLabel":147},{"imgWidth":149,"imgPosition":143,"textPosition":133},{"url":152,"width":153,"height":140},{"type":145,"sectionSettings":225,"settings":226,"text":158,"title":159,"image":227,"links":228},{"textAlign":133,"sectionLabel":156},{"imgWidth":149,"imgPosition":143,"textPosition":133},{"url":161,"width":153,"height":140},[229,232],{"title":156,"target":21,"link":230,"summary":167,"icon":231,"iconPosition":171},{"title":165,"url":166,"target":21},{"iconName":169,"iconSize":170},{"icon":233,"iconPosition":171,"link":234,"summary":177},{"iconSize":170,"iconName":169},{"url":175,"title":176,"target":21},{"type":179,"section_settings":236,"settings":237,"text":187,"cards":238,"sectionSettings":248},{"textAlign":133,"sectionLabel":181,"customClass":182},{"headerLevel":184,"headerFontSize":184,"alignCards":185,"maxCardsPerRow":184,"wholeClickable":65,"cardTheme":186,"alignCardContent":185},[239,242,245],{"type":190,"title":191,"video":240,"image":241,"summary":135},{"vimeoId":193,"videoTitle":191,"videoTranscript":194},{"url":196},{"type":190,"title":198,"video":243,"image":244},{"vimeoId":200,"videoTitle":198,"videoTranscript":201},{"url":203},{"type":190,"title":205,"video":246,"image":247},{"vimeoId":207,"videoTitle":205,"videoTranscript":208},{"url":210},{"sectionLabel":212,"theme":134},"/pages/taking-part.en",{"title":24},"pages/taking-part.en","sP5MiuAbNZ8hgEi0r99OqJ5A8w8vs8vXQ8sVIYA7qAc",{"id":254,"extension":5,"meta":255,"stem":334,"__hash__":335},"dataFiles/data/recruitment.json",{"path":256,"recruitmentCharts":257,"body":315,"title":333},"/data/recruitment",[258,305],{"chartTitle":259,"recruitmentTarget":260,"chartData":261},"Current recruitment for The PANORAMA Study -
